Micromet Irrigation Management

Centralized Distributed Control

Micromet Irrigation Management allows centralized scheduling of irrigation at your sites without the expense of complicated SCADA system or replacing irrigation controllers.

It operates by attaching a two way wireless (cellular phone network) Micromet device to your existing controller, typically using either common wire interruption or a controller sensor port if available.

The existing field controller to defines the run times as it does now, but the Micromet device overrides the irrigation schedule, defining the days on which it is allowed to run.

Controller Monitoring

The device also monitors the activity of your existing in field controller to ensure it is working in conjunction with the system to provide the proper irrigation events to your site.

Master valve or pump start outputs of the controller are logged and sent back daily to the Micromet central server where it is integrated with other information to determine if irrigations are occuring correctly in the field.


Unlike many other controllers which do not know the date, Micromet Basic can be set up to handle odd and even calendar day restrictions.

Soil Moisture Tracking

During each day, depending on the conditions moisture is extracted from the soil by the plants and evaporation combined (evapotranspiration) and rainfall and irrigation add water back to the soil.

Micromet uses a moisture tracking model based on scientifically proven irrigation scheduling techniques to determine how wet or dry your site is.

The model uses site audit data provided by you or one of our accredited auditors, and hourly weather telemetry provided by our network of weather stations and the bureau of meteorology.

Rain Halting

Micromet Pro sites can be set to cease irrigating if more than a certain threshold of rain falls during the irrigation window. Rain data is gathered from Micromet weather stations and Bureau of Meteorology weather stations and rain radar to determine rainfall at your site.

ET Drive

With the optional ET Drive add-on, the site uses soil water tracking to determine when the site should irrigate, rather than using a fixed schedule.  The aim is to only provide enough water to recover the ET loss and to ensure any rainfall is used to its fullest before re-commencing irrigation.

Unlike some other systems which change run-time and irrigate each day to recover ET loss (which leads to shallow root growth) we use an optimal deep irrigation each time, and change how often the site irrigates instead.

When rain falls, this moisture is taken into account and will extend the time until the next irrigation.

This type of irrigation is sometimes called "maximum allowable depletion irrigation".

You can adjust your site parameters to account for micro-climate factors or usage which may increase or decrease its ET, and there are various settings which can customize how it operates.

The Results

  • The more water your site needs per day, the more often it will irrigate, driven by the weather. 
  • We apply just enough water to fill the root zone without overwatering.
  • When rain has occurred, the system postpones regular irrigation until it is dry enough to start again.
  • Using this technique will help the plants at the site to grow a healthy root zone and become more tolerent to water stress.
  • All this happens automatically without having to visit the site.
